Diplomatic Stance Following Recent Summit

Taiwan’s government officially called on China this week to cease its escalating military pressure in the Taiwan Strait, following a high-stakes summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Officials in Taipei confirmed that while the summit’s discourse on Taiwan followed expected patterns, the ongoing reality of military maneuvers remains a primary concern for regional stability.

Context of Cross-Strait Relations

Taiwan has long occupied a central position in U.S.-China diplomatic dialogues. The island operates as a self-governing democracy, a status that Beijing frequently challenges by claiming sovereignty over the territory. Tensions have intensified in recent years as China has increased the frequency of military sorties and naval deployments near the island’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

The Stance of Taipei Officials

Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister and spokesman Liang Wen-chieh addressed the media in Taipei, emphasizing that the recent summit produced no unexpected developments regarding the island’s status. Liang noted that Taiwan remains a recurring theme in Washington-Beijing talks and that the government is maintaining constant communication with American counterparts to monitor any shifts in policy.

Liang clarified that the current instability is driven by Beijing’s tactical choices rather than Taiwan’s democratic governance.
