Congress party workers staged widespread protests across India this week, decrying the central government’s decision to grant a third consecutive one-year extension to the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Demonstrators gathered outside regional party offices and key government installations in major metropolitan centers, including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, alleging that the move undermines the autonomy of the nation’s premier investigative agency.

The Context of Tenure Extensions

The controversy centers on the legislative amendments made to the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, which governs the functioning of the CBI. These amendments, introduced via ordinance in 2021 and later enacted by Parliament, allow the government to extend the tenure of the CBI Director and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Chief for up to five years, in one-year increments.

Previously, these posts were strictly limited to a fixed two-year tenure to ensure independence from executive influence. Critics argue that the ability to grant yearly extensions creates a system where investigative heads may feel beholden to the political party currently in power, potentially compromising their impartiality in high-stakes corruption cases.

Political Allegations and Institutional Integrity

Congress spokespersons have framed the protests as a defense of democratic institutions. Party leaders argue that the repeated extensions effectively turn the CBI into a tool for political vendetta, suggesting that the government utilizes the agency to target opposition leaders while shielding its own members.
