In a major step toward enhancing its long-range strike capabilities, the Indian Army is set to induct two additional regiments of the indigenously developed Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system, bringing the total number of operational Pinaka regiments to eight by the end of 2025. The move is part of a broader modernization plan to phase out legacy Soviet-era Grad BM-21 systems and bolster India’s deterrence along sensitive borders.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the 214-mm Pinaka system is capable of launching 72 rockets in just 44 seconds, saturating enemy positions across a 1,000m x 800m area. Each regiment comprises three batteries, with six launchers per battery, and is equipped with automated gun aiming and positioning systems (AGAPS), command posts, and logistics vehicles.
The Pinaka system has a base range of 38 km, with extended-range (ER) variants capable of striking targets up to 75 km. Future versions under development aim to reach 120 km and 300 km, according to DRDO officials.
🛡️ Strategic Deployment and Expansion
The two new regiments are currently undergoing troop training and are expected to be fully operational in the coming months. Equipment for two more regiments is slated for delivery by the end of 2025, with full operational readiness projected for early 2026.
Currently, six Pinaka regiments are deployed along the northern border with China and the western front with Pakistan. The Army ultimately plans to field 22 Pinaka regiments, making it the mainstay of India’s rocket artillery.

The expansion follows a ₹2,580 crore contract signed in 2020 with BEML, Tata Power, and Larsen & Toubro for six additional regiments. The Pinaka program aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, promoting indigenous defence manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
