Veteran Bollywood actress Mumtaz has reignited discussions about her alleged rivalry with fellow icon Sharmila Tagore, asserting that she has won more awards than her contemporary. In a recent interview, Mumtaz clarified that while both actresses were top stars of their era, there was no jealousy between them.
“Rivalry for what? I had nothing to do with Sharmila Tagore. She was among the top actors, and so was I. On the contrary, I think I have won more awards than she ever has,” Mumtaz stated during the conversation. She emphasized that their paths rarely crossed on a personal level, adding, “I was never close to her. I was not friendly with her, and neither was she.”
Mumtaz also reflected on her successful collaborations with superstar Rajesh Khanna, noting that she starred in over 15 films with him, all of which were hits. She contrasted this with Sharmila Tagore’s fewer projects alongside Khanna, highlighting her own chemistry with the actor.
Despite the decades-old speculation about their rivalry, Mumtaz dismissed any notion of animosity, attributing the rumors to public perception rather than reality. She concluded by expressing gratitude for the love she received from her fans, which she credits for her enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
The remarks have sparked renewed interest in the dynamic between these two legendary actresses, offering a glimpse into the competitive yet respectful relationships that defined Bollywood’s golden era.
