Judicial Integrity Challenged in Toronto Courtroom

An Ontario Court judge dismissed a dangerous driving case against Khalid Idris this week after ruling that the prosecution’s conduct toward a police witness compromised the integrity of the judicial process. Justice Mara Greene issued the stay of proceedings following revelations that Crown attorney Marnie Goldenberg confronted Constable Edin Hasanbasic in a courthouse hallway after the officer provided testimony favorable to the defense.

Idris had been facing charges related to an incident in which he allegedly steered his motorcycle into a Toronto police officer. The collapse of the case centers on the interaction between the prosecutor and the witness, which Justice Greene described as a significant breach of the Crown’s duty to maintain objectivity.

The Conflict Over Testimony

The controversy emerged when Constable Hasanbasic appeared as a witness for the defense, providing an account of the events that contradicted the prosecution’s theory of the case. Following his testimony, surveillance footage and witness accounts captured Goldenberg engaging in a heated hallway confrontation with the officer.
